Dark Heritage: considerazioni diacroniche e sincroniche sull’approccio alle eredità culturali scomode
Dark Heritage: diachronic and synchronic considerations about dealing with unpleasant cultural heritage

Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft – Villa Vigoni

In the past few years, scholarship has started to more clearly differentiate between „Heritage“ and „Dark Heritage,“ with the latter term referring to forms of heritage that are considered „difficult,“ „uncomfortable,“ or „controversial.“ In Dissonant Heritage (1996), J. E. Tunbridge and Gregory J. Ashworth first stressed the existence of relevant dissonances within heritage and discussed different aspects of the “uncomfortable heritage.” While during the past two decades this topic has developed into a relevant research field in English-speaking tourism studies, particularly with reference to Dark Tourism and Thanatourism, it has been surprisingly neglected in German- and Italian-speaking cultural and social studies. This Villa Vigoni-Workshop is therefore dedicated to a deeper analysis of this phenomenon, including discussions about the value of the concept itself and whether it makes sense to distinguish it from the general concept of heritage. On the one hand, and from a diachronic perspective, it is indeed important to highlight the heuristic potential of the concept. We argue that all epochs and all cultures developed both forms of “dark heritage” as well as mechanisms of coping with it. A case in point is the Roman damnatio memoriae: the destruction of monuments and of cultural heritage of any kind is inextricably linked with a desire to cleanse memory, to free society from its past, to destroy old identities and to thus make place for new identities and traditions. At the same time, however, more recent studies on this Roman practice have revealed that such destructions always leave a gap that highlights the absence of a memory and reveals that a removal has taken place. As a result, the negative heritage is not forgotten – but all the more present due to its having been removed. On the other hand, we wish to analyze contemporary practices in dealing with dark heritage, and especially the public discussions surrounding it. Synchronic perspectives become more relevant here, including investigations of the different actors (as the political field, scholarship, education), the conflicts, and the contradictions involved in dealing with this heritage (as, for example, fascist architecture). In this sense it is important to highlight the touristic function of dark heritage, not only in the form of tourism sites, but also in its various manifestations in art, literature, and religion.
